PHP RSS publishing

There is no doubt that the best solutions for RSS management is to use PHP. PHP RSS tools cover tasks such as creating and publishing RSS feeds as well as RSS mash up's for re-publishing RSS.

Why use PHP for RSS?

A majority of web hosts offer PHP which means it is pretty much a standard for programming web solutions. This has also meant that many of the free and pay for tools have also been developed in PHP.

If you have never heard of PHP or do not want to get your hands dirty then this is not the solution for you. There are plenty of javascript RSS altenatives in the RSS tools directory.

For those of you who are serious about RSS I would recommend that you use PHP and host it on your own server. I have already mentioned the reason for using PHP. The reason I suggest you host your own PHP scripts is that you do not want to have to rely on a third party for essential PHP RSS processing. What happens if that third party has problems or worse closes up shop.

PHP RSS tools for publishing

There are two solutions you need for processing RSS, the first is the need to create an RSS feed. The second is the need to re-publish other RSS feeds. To create an RSS feed you can download a free PHP class from bitfolge. They have done most of the hard work for you.

  • You will need to install the class on your server
  • Write your PHP script to use the class
  • Use a database to store your feed content (optional)
  • Create a front end or Cron job to publish your fee

I am not going to go into a detailed tutorial here as it pretty much gives you the basics on the bitfolge site.

Your second solution is to be able to take one or more existing RSS feeds and republish them on your own site. To do this I strongly recommend SimplePie, again it's free. There is plenty of documentation on the site and a helpful forum if you get stuck.

With these two solutions I have suggested you should be able to create your own RSS feeds from scratch and publish RSS feeds. This is pretty much going to cover most of what you would want to do with RSS.
